Exposition “Gran Sur: Arte Contemporáneo chileno en la Colección Engel” was inaugurated in Madrid

More than 400 chilean contemporary artworks and 50 latin american artworks belong to Colección Engel. Part of the collection was exhibit at Sala Alcalá 31 in Madrid with the inauguration of the exposition “Gran Sur: Arte Contemporáneo Chileno en la Colección Engel”, curated by Christian Viveros Fauné.

On february 24th in Madrid was the inauguration of “Gran Sur” exposition. The exhibition was coincided with the gala of the “A” awards for collecting, awarded by the Arco Foundation, promoted by IFEMA, and with the International Contemporary Art Fair, Arco.


This is the first time which an important exhibition of works by contemporary chilean artists has been presented in Spain.

“The exhibition not only represents the most comprehensive introduction to chilean art that has been produced in recent decades, but also articulates a different vision of the extraordinary creativity exhibited by several generations of chilean artists both inside and outside the country”, points Sala Alcala 31 website.


The exposition, curated by Christian Viveros Fauné and organized by Consejería de la Cultura y Turismo de la Comunidad de Madrid, will be seen from February 25 to April 26 at Sala Alcalá 31 in Madrid.


89 artworks from 37 chilean artists being part of “Gran Sur”. The exposition gathering picture, sculpture, photography, installations, textile and graphic work, hybrid projects and multidisciplinary presentations. Artworks as “The Laughing Alligatora video was shooted in the Venezuelan Amazon in 1979 by Juan Downey and the huge neon of Fernando Prats which was exhibited at Venice Biennale in 2011, are part of the exposition. Other artists whose artworks are present too in “Gran Sur”, are Voluspa Jarpa, Paz Errázuriz, Alejandra Prieto, Pilar Quinteros and Camila Ramírez, who will be in Ch.ACO -11 too being part of Agorafilia exposition.

“A” awards to collecting, recognize the artistic value of collectors and institutions funds, as well as their work in supporting the dissemination of contemporary art. This year awards was given to 6 collections, including the Engel collection, one of the largest private collections in Chile, belonging to businessman Claudio Engel. The other 5 recognized collections were: Daniel and Mirella Levinas Collection (Argentina), María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation (Spain), Susana Collection and Ricardo Steinbruch (Brazil), Otazu Foundation Collection (Spain) and Erling Kagge Collection (Norway).
